Bar Stool Height Guide

Use the seat-height calculator

Choose a bar stool by its seat height, not the height of its backrest. Measure from the floor to the top of your bench or bar, then start with a seat about 25–30 cm below the top. Separately check the space beneath the underside, any support rail, and the stool’s full footprint.

Bench height to seat height: a starting guide

Floor to top of bench or bar Starting seat-height range
85 cm 55–60 cm
90 cm 60–65 cm
95 cm 65–70 cm
100 cm 70–75 cm
105 cm 75–80 cm
110 cm 80–85 cm

These ranges are a starting point. The thickness of the top, an apron below it, armrests, the sitter and the seat shape can change the fit. A label such as “counter stool” or “bar stool” does not replace the measurements.

Measure these five things before ordering

  1. Bench or bar top: measure from the finished floor to the top surface.
  2. Underside clearance: measure to the lowest obstruction where your knees will sit. Include rails, drawers and aprons.
  3. Actual seat height: use the floor-to-seat measurement. Overall height includes the backrest and can be much taller.
  4. Stool footprint and arm height: check the base width, depth and the space needed to turn. If you want to tuck a stool away, compare its back and arms with the underside too.
  5. Space between seats: plan using the widest part of the stool, then allow additional room for people to sit, turn and get up. A pack of four does not mean four will fit your island.

Counter stools, bar stools and adjustable stools

Counter-height stools generally serve lower kitchen benches. Bar-height stools serve higher surfaces. Compare each product’s stated seat measurement with your own bench; the names alone do not guarantee a match.

Adjustable and gas-lift stools offer a seat-height range. Check both ends of the stated seat range. Adjustable feet used to level a stool are different from a mechanism that raises and lowers the seat.

Swivel describes rotation. A stool can swivel while keeping a fixed seat height. A taller stool’s footrest should give the sitter a place to support their feet; reaching the floor is not the fit test for bar seating.

Seat height and overall height are different

For example, the Priscus grey stool lists a 63 cm seat and an 88 cm overall height. At a 90 cm bench, the seat-to-top difference is 27 cm. The backrest still needs a separate clearance check. Never use an overall-height figure as the seat height.

If a listing gives only “height” or a height range without identifying the seat, ask Bar Stools Republic to confirm the seat measurement before ordering. Include the product link and your bench measurements.

Common questions

What seat height should I start with for a 90 cm kitchen bench?

Start by comparing 60–65 cm seats, which leave 25–30 cm to the top. Then check knee clearance below the underside, the footrest and the complete stool dimensions.

Can I use a 75 cm stool at a 90 cm bench?

That leaves only 15 cm between the seat and the top, before accounting for the underside. Compare a lower seat instead and check your measurements.

Will an adjustable stool suit every bench?

No. Its actual seat-height range still needs to overlap the range that suits your bench. The base, armrests and backrest also need enough room.

Does a stool with a back need a different seat height?

The seat-to-top comparison is the same. The back and any arms add extra measurements to check, particularly if you want the stool to tuck beneath the bench.

Measurement reference: IKEA Australia’s bar-stool selection guidance uses a seat-to-counter gap as a rule of thumb. This guide uses 25–30 cm as a starting band and requires a separate underside check. The product’s supplied dimensions remain the final reference.

Find your starting seat height

Enter the height to the top of your bench or bar. The calculator subtracts a 25–30 cm seat-to-top gap.

cm

Measure the top surface, not the underside. For example, enter 90 for a 90 cm kitchen bench.

This is a starting range, not a guarantee of fit. Separately check the space for knees beneath the underside, support rails and apron. Check the stool’s actual seat height, footrest and full footprint.
